Herein is outlined the history of the Empire of Otan. We take as our source the works of the historians of Ouranea, who have often been accused of a certain bias in their interpretations of history. Since all historians display a certain bias in all their works, it seems foolish to discard what has proven to be a wise view to take of Otanian history.

The Pre-Conquest Period Edit

This period is held to have run from about the year -200 to around 700. What we know of it comes to us mostly through archaeology; writing was not developed until late in this period.

Kau was inhabited by the Uzheulo tribes (hunter-gatherers, mostly) in the north and the Hokhalos peoples (agricultural, living in small villages of fixed dwellings). These folk succeeded the high civilization of the Magocracy of the Steel Wizards, which fell at the end of the previous civilized age. They retain a primitive form of sorcery based on their rather vague recollections of the Magocracy's sorcery.

The Hokhalos created an ideographic form of writing, which they use to record their myths and legends.

The Vonkhoumo Conquest Edit

Around 700 the Vonkhoumo invasions began.

The Vonkhoumo were seafaring peoples from the Sedolne Archipelago northwest of Kau. They possesses shamanistic beliefs and instincts, oriented towards necromancy, so the worship of the Dead was central to their religion. They preferred burial on land, usually in large barrows. They could smelt bronze, probably learned from the Físolè Empire; Vonkhoumo legends tell the tale of a 'slavery' that they fled, and many assume the slave-holding power was Físolè. They lived in small towns and villages, each of which tended to be governed by two or three eminent clans.

They established outposts in Kau around 600 -- small repair and refit operations on the shore of some isolated harbor along the coast of the Varbeile Sea, surrounded by a wooden palisade to keep the animals out. The local Uzheulo soon perceived the newcomers as a threat, and began to attack and burn them. The Vonkhoumo responded. Their bronze weapons proved far superior to the fire-hardened sticks and slicks of the Uzheulo. The Vonkhoumo seized large tracts of land in coastal northwest Kau and began to colonize them.

Around 750 the Vonkhoumo began to cultivate the land. Their numbers swelled dramatically. Soon their was continuous warfare on their continuously expanding frontiers. The Uzheulo tribes banded together in larger and larger groupings, but to no effect, for the Vonkhoumo rapidly moved eastwards.

Around 825 the Hokhalos warlords and chieftains found themselves resisting Vonkhoumo incursions. Since both sides possessed metal weapons the conflict was more equal. However, the Vonkhoumo had thrived in Kau, and far outnumbered the Hokhalos. By 950 the Vonkhoumo ruled all of Kau, with the Hokhalos reduced to holding Bithdrau and the Pobelaim Islands.
